A TOUCHING STORY

WALL-E is a lonely little robotic trash compactor who was left behind after Earth was abandoned some 700 years earlier. He has been methodically cleaning up the trash-ridden planet ever since, and harboring a tiny plant he has found among the garbage. Eve, meanwhile, lives on the immense spaceship Axiom, which is also home to the fat, blob-like remains of the human race. She is a probe robot that flies to Earth to determine if the planet is ready for habitation. WALL-E takes one look at the streamlined, angelic Eve and falls in love.

It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the little robot. As soon as he giggled (after his pet cockroach tickled him) I was hooked. This hardworking rusty guy with his small home full of collected treasures is so poignant. His lonely life is so human. Eve is just as likable, but much more sleek. Near the end comes a heartbreaking moment when a key character seems to lose all personality, all self. So well done, it made me think of how families must feel when a loved one disappears inside him- or herself with Alzheimer’s disease.

All ends well, of course. As the credits roll, the artwork illustrates how everyone and everything lives happily after ever.

AN ADULT MEANING

For adults, WALL-E is not so much about a cute little robot as it is about the future of man. What happens when humans become such creatures of the consumer culture, so fat they can’t even stand up without assistance, living literally on auto-pilot, that they do nothing but buy cheap merchandise, stuff their faces at the Regurgitated Food Buffet and lie around watching video screens? Can they ever get back to the land and set their souls free? Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young asked that question decades ago; Pixar asks it today.

There is even a sly political reference. Broadcasting a message to the passengers of the spaceship, the CEO of monster corporation Buy ‘n’ Large — played in live-action by the inimitable Fred Willard, and named Shelby Forthright — says they will be continuing on their never-ending, hopeless cruise to nowhere because they must “Stay the course!” Hmmm, haven’t I heard a president use that line?

Ive been an avid movie fan for years and nobody beats Indiana Jones. The greatest motion picture hero ever. What else can you expect than the best from a colaberation of two of the world’s greatest minds in movie making: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Plus the talents of Harrison Ford, the amazing locations, the (then groundbreaking) special effects, and breath taking action sequences makes this the greatest trilogy of all time. Never have i seen a film that can top Raiders of The Lost Ark, my all time favorite. And never have I experienced a better sequel than both Temple of Doom and the Last Crusade. Join mild mannered Dr. Henry Jones Jr. A.K.A. Indiana Jones, as he battles, Nazis, Cults, Chinese Mafia and snakes across the Globe for the sake of the world. And now that they’re on DVD you can bet there better than ever. With Special Features behind the making of movie history.A must see movie for flim fans, action/adventure fans, and anyone period. Dont miss one minute of the action!

The Many Facets of Stephen Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD
Grady Harp, writer and curator, 04/03/2008

When it comes to a work of the musical stage it is difficult to imagine a finer one than Stephen Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET. For those who saw the original 1979 Hal Prince extravagant production starring Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou/George Hearn, and then the 2005 revival as condensed so creatively by John Doyle and re-orchestrated by Sarah Travis who placed the orchestral instruments in the hands of the 10 actors who tell the story of the strange Todd, the Tim Burton (screenplay reduction by Josh Logan) film will only enhance the pleasures of seeing SWEENEY TODD resurrected in yet another form. Each of these incarnations has its riches and together they establish Sondheim’s work as a masterpiece. Johnny Depp makes a convincing Sweeney Todd, in looks and demeanor as well as in singing voice, and Helena Bonham Carter’s Mrs. Lovett fits right into Tim Burton’s vision of the dark, squalid and seedy London. Timothy Spall is perfect as the oily Beadle, Alan Rickman makes Judge Turpin an understandable villain, Jamie Campbell Bower and Jayne Wisener are suitably infatuated young lovers, and Sacha Baron Cohen and Ed Sanders give top flight cameos as Signor Pirelli and Toby. The one advantage of seeing this fine film on DVD is the option of turning on the subtitles so as not to miss a word of Sondheim’s superb lyrics. For this viewer, however, the most successful version of this ‘opera’ is the John Doyle production currently on the boards in Los Angeles with Judy Kaye as the most satisfying Mrs. Lovett on record. This uniquely economical and endlessly creative production goes to the core of the work better than any other version, and if this traveling company comes anywhere near your home, go see it! It is the essential SWEENEY TODD and a fine adjunct to seeing the film version again and again. Grady Harp

A lonely young boy vows to protect the rapidly growing hatchling that emerges from a mysterious egg found on the shores of a Scottish loch in My Dog Skip and Tuck Everlasting director Jay Russell’s screen adaptation of writer Dick King-Smith’s popular children’s novel. Angus MacMorrow (Alex Etel) has made a most unusual discovery, and he’s about to find out just how one innocent boy’s greatest fantasy can also be a frightened adult population’s greatest threat. Unable to identify the egg that he found while walking the sandy shores, Angus is even more perplexed about the discovery and the creature that emerges resembles what comes to be known as a Water Horse, which Angus names Crusoe. As the bizarre new life form begins to grow at an alarming rate, it soon becomes obvious that Angus will not be able to keep it a secret for very long, and the young boy will have to do some seriously quick thinking if he is to keep his new friend safe Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
